What is the Ivy League? What is the list of Ivy League colleges?

Image

At its core, the Ivy League is simply an athletic conference. The Ivy League consists of eight very old schools that are part of a very old football league. The eight schools in the Ivy League are Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Dartmouth, Penn, Brown, Columbia, and Cornell. The Ivy League is prestigious because it does not allow additional members beyond the original eight, and because all of the schools in the Ivy League are top-notch.

Are there good colleges outside of the Ivy League?

As mentioned above, all the Ivy League represents is an athletic conference. It is true that all of the schools in the Ivy League are very, very good, but it is also true that there are many other very, very good colleges in the United States that are of equal quality to Ivy League schools but simply did not have the good fortune of being included in the original 8 schools in the football league. Therefore, just because a school is not in the Ivy League does not automatically mean it is not "Ivy League quality." For example, MIT, CalTech, Stanford, and Berkeley are all Ivy League quality schools that simply to not happen to be in the Ivy League. There are plenty of wonderful colleges in the United States that are not in the Ivy League.

What does this really mean? What this means is that students and families need to truly understand what a "good" college is. So now you might ask- what is a good college? Plain and simple, a good college is one that is a good fit for you - not necessarily the most prestigious and selective school like one in the Ivy League or Stanford - but a college that suits you as an individual.

Is Harvard a good college? Absolutely. Is Harvard necessarily a good college fit for every student? Absolutely not! Professional College Consulting of America is dedicated to helping each student find the best college that suits them as an individual. Spending the time to find an ideal college match will ensure academic success, personal satisfaction, and a rewarding college experience.

Do the Ivy League colleges give athletic scholarships?

Even though most Ivy League teams are NCAA Division I, if you are looking to be involved in athletics at an Ivy League college, you should not have your heart set on an athletic scholarship. While Ivy League colleges will assist families with other financial aid if they fall below a specified household income, the Ivy League colleges will not simply provide students will general athletic scholarships like most other NCAA Division I schools. Nonetheless, serious high school athletes who are interested in the Ivy League may be able to gain an advantage in the college admissions process. Professional College Consulting of America is well equipped, and experienced, in helping high school athletes gain admission into an Ivy League college.

But in general, the Ivy League colleges are usually looking for the whole package- high GPA's and standardized tests, significant involvement and contributions to school and community activities, and unique personal characteristics.
